Autism

Autism affects 1 in 36 children, and one of the earliest signs is a language impairment. Early speech-language intervention has been shown to improve outcomes in children with autism.

The Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center has received its Certified Autism Center designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards. This designation means that at least 80% of the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center staff have undergone a rigorous training program that will assist in providing speech pathology and audiology services for those who have autism. JSHC is the first and only nonprofit healthcare provider in Northeast Florida to undergo this training. Michelle Killian, the Director of IBCCES states that "I strongly believe that creating professional partnerships that help care for those with autism and other sensory processing disorders improves the quality of care. Disparities in patient-provider communication lower patient self-efficacy and usage of preventative services. This training can help eliminate that." IBCCES was formed in 2001 and is the leading credentialing organization for professionals in the field of autism.
