Planned giving

Leaving an Echo of Kindness: A Legacy of Sound and Speech

Planned giving is a powerful way for donors to ensure that the gift of communication—hearing and speech services—continues for generations in Northeast Florida.

Note: This information is for educational purposes. We recommend consulting with your financial advisor or attorney to determine which giving vehicle is best for your situation.

BEQUEST

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DEDUCTION (QCD)

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DEDUCTION (QCD)

A bequest is the simplest way to make a lasting impact. You can designate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your assets to the Center after other distributions have been made.

  • How it works: You include a provision in your will or living trust.
  • The Benefit: You retain full control of your assets during your lifetime. Your estate may also receive a charitable tax deduction, reducing the overall tax burden on your heirs.
  • Impact: A bequest provides the foundational "forever" funding that allows us to invest in the latest diagnostic technology.

If you are age 70½ or older, you can give directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center without the distribution counting as taxable income.

  • How it works: Instruct your IRA custodian to transfer a specific amount (up to $105,000 annually) directly to the Center.
  • The Benefit: This is an "above-the-line" deduction that can satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year, effectively lowering your adjusted gross income.
  • Impact: This "tax-smart" giving allows you to see your impact immediately, helping children and adults overcome communication barriers today.

LIFE INSURANCE DESGINATION

LIFE INSURANCE DESGINATION

You can turn an old or unnecessary life insurance policy into a significant gift for the Center.

  • How it works: You can name the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center as a primary or contingent beneficiary of your policy. Alternatively, you can transfer ownership of the policy to us.
  • The Benefit: If you transfer ownership, you may receive an immediate income tax deduction. If you simply name us as a beneficiary, your estate receives a charitable deduction.
  • Impact: This allows you to make a much larger gift than might be possible through your current cash flow, ensuring our long-term stability..

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST

LIFE INSURANCE DESGINATION

A Charitable Remainder Trust is a "win-win" for donors who want to support the Center while also securing an income stream for themselves or their loved ones.

  • How it works: You transfer assets (like cash or appreciated stock) into a trust. The trust pays you (or your beneficiaries) an income for a set period or for life. After that period, the remaining balance goes to the Center.
  • The Benefit: You receive an immediate partial income tax deduction, and if you fund the trust with appreciated assets, you can often avoid capital gains taxes.
  • Impact: CRTs provide the Center with significant "seed capital" for future expansions or new community outreach programs.

Planned Giving - Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at development@shcjax.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Planned giving also referred to as legacy giving, is a way to make a significant gift to the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center that is integrated into your overall financial and estate planning. Unlike annual donations made from your discretionary income, planned gifts are typically made from your assets (like stocks, real estate, or retirement accounts) or as part of your will.

A planned gift allows you to leave a lasting impact on your community. Your contribution ensures that future generations of children and adults in Northeast Florida, regardless of their ability to pay, have access to essential audiology and speech-language services. It is a way to "pay it forward" and ensure the gift of sound and speech remains available for all.

There are several ways to include JSHC in your plans:

•Bequests: A gift made through your will or living trust. You can leave a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the "remainder" after family have been provided for.

•Retirement Plan Designations: Naming JSHC as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or 403(b). This is often the most tax-efficient way to give.

•Life Insurance: Naming the Center as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

•Appreciated Securities: Donating stocks or bonds can provide significant tax savings by avoiding capital gains taxes.

Not at all. Many planned gifts come from people of modest means who want to ensure their life’s work continues to do good. Whether it is a gift of $500 or $50,000, every contribution helps us provide screenings, hearing aids, and therapy sessions for those in need.

Because JSHC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, most planned gifts provide substantial tax advantages:

•Estate Tax: Gifts made via a will generally reduce the taxable value of your estate.

•Income Tax: Gifts made during your lifetime (like stock or QCDs from an IRA) can provide immediate income tax deductions.

•Capital Gains: Donating appreciated assets can eliminate capital gains taxes you would otherwise owe.

**Note: We always recommend consulting with a financial advisor or tax professional to understand how these benefits apply to your specific situation.**

Yes. While "unrestricted" gifts provide the most flexibility for the Center’s greatest needs, you can choose to designate your gift to a specific area, such as the Fund-A-Future Program, senior audiology services, or another project or program that inspires you.

To ensure your gift reaches us, your advisor will need our legal name and Tax ID:

•Legal Name: Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center, Inc.

•Address: 1010 N. Davis Street, Suite 101, Jacksonville, FL 32209

•Federal Tax ID (EIN): 59-0970718

We would love to know! Notifying us allows us to thank you during your lifetime and ensures we understand your wishes for how the gift should be used. You can also remain anonymous if you prefer.
