JSHC Expands Operations to New South Duval Location

Jacksonville Speech and Hearing Center, Northeast Florida’s only nonprofit audiology & speech clinic, is expanding its legacy of accessible services to a satellite location at 14595 Philips Highway. The vision for the new location is to expand JSHC’s reach into southern Duval County and St. John’s County to meet soaring population demands and an exponentially growing need for audiology & speech-language pathology therapies. “We’re going to make speech & hearing solutions more accessible…and convenient to our current patients living in that area,” says CEO & President Michael Howland.

Historically, JSHC has operated its primary clinic in downtown Jacksonville for over 70 years. The advent of the clinic came to fruition in 1949, when speech therapist Sarah Barrett recognized that her own practice would not be able to meet the growing caseload of children needing speech therapy. Barrett collaborated with local pediatrician, Hugh Carithers, and Junior League Member, Jane Grey Scott, to bring the Children’s Speech Correction Clinic to life- Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center’s first incarnation.

Over the following decades, JSHC experienced some changes and additions to move with the times and continue to offer quality, equitable care to its community. However, the clinic also experienced various periods of austerity, bearing the brunt of economic recessions, scarce funds, and the need for upgraded facilities. In recent years, the organization has grown its services. Currently, JSHC operates its downtown clinic at 1010 N. Davis St. and its administrative offices in the Jessie Ball DuPont center, where it collaborates with other nonprofits. Additionally, JSHC has been recognized by Bold City’s Best’s Best Hearing Aid Center for 3 consecutive years (2019-2021) as well as being voted their Best Local Nonprofit in 2020. Local philanthropists, volunteers, and everyday heroes wanting to make a difference are what have made the clinic’s mission and expansion possible. “We are extremely grateful for our donors and board members for their generosity in funding the buildout of our new location,” adds Howland.

JSHC Board and staff are delighted to share the grand opening of the Jacksonville Speech and Hearing Center- South location with their patients, supporters, and the Greater Jacksonville-Metro community. On Tuesday, October 12, at 5:30 PM, the new facility will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony featuring honorary emcee Katie Jeffries of First Coast News and showcase tours of the clinic, food, and an evening of celebration. If you would like to make an appointment or inquire about speech & audiology services, the new clinic is now accepting patients and booking appointments, which can be made by calling (904) 355-3403.
